Review Board Game (CSSA Stages 1 to 5)

Thanks to Marilyn S. for our post today.

This board game has been designed to be played with any of the five stages of the CSSA notes for Division 5-8 (Primary).  It can also be played with Division 9-12 (Junior).  All the question have been taken out of the lesson book but from year to year, some question can change in the lesson books.

Background

It was quite a few years ago that I was looking for a game I could play in Sunday School for revision that children would enjoy and at the same time answer lots of questions. With much thinking and planning I came up with this design so that it could be used for any lessons from any of the five stages.  For about 8 years I used a cardboard hand drawn game, which over the years became a bit worse for wear.  It was with much appreciation that my son redesigned the game on his computer and we now have a colourful printable game.

Things you will need

  • Playing board
  • Dice
  • Word cards
  • Questions cards
  • Chance cards
  • Point cards
  • Counters

Aim of the Game

To collect point cards as you go around the board.  Points can be collected in different ways … for example, by answering questions, giving information on the word cards, landing on a bonus square.

Rules

  • All players start on the Start square.
  • Players take turns and move in a clockwise direction after throwing the dice.
  • A player landing on a Q has to answer a question. A correct answer is worth a point.
  • A player landing on a star has to give a few words to connect with the word on the card. A correct
    explanation is worth a point.
  • A player landing on a ? picks up a chance card and has to do what the card requires.
  • A player landing on a B (bonus) receives an extra point.
  • A player landing on a F (free) does not collect points nor answer questions; it is a free stop.
  • A player landing on a corner square (excluding the start square) needs to take the detour.
  • A player can continue going around the square as many times as is needed, collecting a point each time Start is passed.
  • At the end of the game, points are added up and the player with the most points is the winner.

There is no time limit to playing the game as the children can just keep going around the board until the end of the lesson or an agreed time.

Printing

The board game is best printed on a large sheet of paper and then laminated.  It makes it easier to print all the cards on different colours of cardboard.
